July 31, Our Community Gathers / Nuestra Comunidad Se Reúne Rev. Michael Diaz, Joy Jolley Prelude / Preludio Invocation / Invocación Hymn / Himno Capriccio by Kevin McChesney Since Jesus Came into my Heart What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought, Since Jesus came into my heart! I have light in my soul for which long I have sought, Since Jesus came into my heart! HeavenSound Handbells Marcial Renteria (9 am) Nikita Peterson (11 am) Since Jesus came into my heart, Since Jesus came into my heart, Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roll, Since Jesus came into my heart. I have ceased from my wandering and going astray, Since Jesus came into my heart! And my pain, which was deep is now all washed away, Since Jesus came into my heart! Since Jesus came into my heart, Since Jesus came into my heart, Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roll, Since Jesus came into my heart. I shall go and proclaim to the world all I know, Since Jesus came into my heart! And I'm happy, so happy, as onward I go, Since Jesus came into my heart. Since Jesus came into my heart, Since Jesus came into my heart, Floods of joy o'er my soul like the sea billows roll, Since Jesus came into my heart. We Gather From many places we gather here. This is a high point of our week. We see our friends. We make new friends. And we spend time with The Friend -- the loving Christ who meets us where we are, as we are. In this Sanctuary we worship, and through worship the courage within us is kindled to inspire courageous living beyond this place. We Worship What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought, since Jesus came into my heart! In Scripture the heart is understood in various ways. Sometimes it refers to our reason or understanding; sometimes it may refer to our affections and emotions. At other times it refers to our will. Generally it denotes the whole soul and all of its faculties, not individually, but as they work together. In this hymn, writer Rufus H. McDaniel is making heart and life synonymous, rejoicing that the experience of God's love in our hearts changes not only how we feel but the whole of our lives! + Please rise in body or spirit. First Reading / Primera Lectura Lenn O'Connor (9 am) Tony Stegall (11 am) The Gift of Struggle Joan Chittister, OSB The process of struggle is the process of the internal redefinition of the self. People do it in the midst of a marriage that is failing on one set of expectations and in need of being renegotiated around others. People do it when the work they do ceases to be for them what they expected it to be. People do it when they find themselves locked out socially of the very places they want to be in life: in the midst of the dominant culture, in a position of power and authority, in a place of comfort and security. When our expectations run aground of our reality, we begin to rethink the meaning and shape of our lives. We begin to rethink not just our past decisions but our very selves. It is a slow but determining deconstruction of the self so that a real person can be reborn in us, beyond the expectations of others, even beyond our own previously unassailable assumptions. And struggle is its catalyst. Response / Respuesta God who began a good work in me, God who began a good work in me Will be faithful to complete it, Will be faithful to complete it; God who started the work will be faithful to complete it in me. Reflecting on the Word Penuel, also known as the face of God , is a place not far from Succoth, on the east of the Jordan and north of the river Jabbok. It is also called Peniel meaning I have seen a divine being face to face, yet my life is preserved. Here Jacob wrestled with one as with an angel of God until daybreak when he declares, I have seen God face to face! + Second Reading / Segunda Lectura Genesis 32:22-31 Georgette Monaghan (9 am) Jordan Marshall (11 am) The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, Let me go, for the day is breaking. But Jacob said, I will not let you go, unless you bless me. So he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. Then the man said, You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed. Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved. The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because of his hip. We build on a rich history of social justice for, and on behalf of, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Since its founding in 1968, Metropolitan Community Churches have been at the vanguard of civil and human rights movements as an international advocate for vulnerable people in places where religious orthodoxy, sexism, transphobia and homophobia can result in violence and death. MCC has been on the forefront in the struggle towards marriage equality in the US and other countries worldwide and continues to be a powerful voice in the LGBTQ equality movement. MCC s ministry reaches over 43,000 members in over 250 churches in 22 countries worldwide. Metropolitan Community Churches are on a bold mission to transform hearts, lives, and history. We are a movement that faithfully proclaims God's inclusive love for all people and proudly bears witness to the holy integration of spirituality and sexuality. Because of our faith we are called to: do justice, show kindness, and live humbly with God (Micah 6:8); explore life's questions with open hearts and minds; raise our voices in sacred defiance against exclusion, whether religious, political or systemic; reach out to those with no hope; equip new generations of remarkable, far-reaching spiritual activists. The Mission of Resurrection MCC is to demonstrate God's unconditional love to all people through Christian action. The Vision of Resurrection MCC is to ATTRACT people into a relationship with God through radical INCLUSION into God's family, transform them to Christ-like MATURITY, and MOBILIZE them for their life purpose. At Resurrection MCC, every member and friend is a minister of the church. We envision a Christian community that values diversity and is as diverse and all-encompassing as creation. Through salvation, service, study, and tithing, each member and friend will live and grow in faith and be spiritually fed. We embrace four core values: Core Values Inclusion Love is our greatest moral value and resisting exclusion is a primary focus of our ministry. We want to continue to be the conduits of a faith where everyone is included in the family of God, and where all parts of our being are welcomed at God s table. Community Offering a safe and open community for people to worship, learn and grow in their faith is our deep desire. We are committed to equipping ourselves and each other to do the work that God has called us to do in the world. Spiritual Transformation Providing a message of liberation from the oppressive religious environment of our day or to those experiencing God for the first time is what guides our ministry. We believe that when people are invited to experience God through the life and ministry of Christ, lives will be transformed. Social Action Working to talk less and do more, we are committed to resisting the structures that oppress people and standing with to those who suffer under the weight of oppressive systems, being guided always by our commitment to Global Human Rights. 5 The Chalice opening... receiving... offering Life in Fullness Where Will You Journey? For more information contact: Fishers Net Prayer Ministry A Dialogue With God by Ron Reeser Recently a coworker sent me an asking for assistance and outlining what they perceived to be the correct procedure for a configuration change. Since they were unsure on how to best proceed or what to ask for, a cartoon of a shipwrecked person about to be rescued was included for levity in the . In the cartoon, as the rescue helicopter neared, the message for help was spelled helf. When the rescue saw the call for helf, the rescue team turned around and left. How many times do we ask, maybe even plead with God for what we think we need and then do not receive it? Maybe we are not asking for what we really need or that which is not in line with God's plan for us. When we ask, yes, God hears and answers, but when the answer is not what we are expecting, maybe we should also ask for God's guidance. Through continued prayerful communication, remember to ask for direction, listen for the answer, and follow-through. Dear Mother, Creator, Father God, in times when our prayers go seemingly unanswered, remind us to ask not simply for our needs, but yours. Help us to listen to your divine direction and to follow through. Help us to reach out away from ourselves, to helping your children, honoring you in all we do, while also creating divine alignment and re-alignment to and within you. We thank you and praise you for your divine assurance and guidance. Thank you and amen! Do you have a prayer request? Under his leadership, HeavenSound Handbells have established relationships within the community as they have played at various churches in and around the Houston area. For the past 15 years, they have played at Houston s Annual Handbell Festival, Feb Fest as one of the featured Handbell choir. They are often requested to play at Weddings, Holy Unions and Memorial services. This year, they collaborated with the Gay Men's Chorus of Houston and the Bayou City Women's Choir in a joint Christmas concert at Jones Hall and at the Festival Hill in Round Top, Texas. Despite their busy schedule, HeavenSound Handbells found time to make 4 great videos that display their skill, their love for ringing and the fun they experience. Jim promises to keep ringing.
