We seek to generate new Founded in 1898 by American Francophiles, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is the leading French language and cultural center in the U.S. An American 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, FIAF is not an agency of the French Government. ideas and promote crosscultural dialogue through partnerships and new platforms of expression. Whether in the historic flagship Beaux-Arts building steps away from Central Park or at satellite locations in New Jersey and Brooklyn, FIAF s language classes and arts programming offer unparalleled opportunities for learning and cultural discovery. FIAF presents a wide range of sophisticated programming in both French and English throughout the year, offering films, talks, and art exhibitions, as well as live performances of music, theater, dance, and more. Each fall, the interdisciplinary contemporary arts festival Crossing the Line presents boundarybreaking works by artists who are transforming cultural practices on both sides of the Atlantic. The spring brings the biennial World Nomads, a festival dedicated to exploring the exchange of ideas and artistic expression throughout the Francophone world. Bastille Day Sasha Arutyunova French Classes Sasha Arutyunova Language Center For more than a century, FIAF has offered New Yorkers the best in French language education. With a growing branch in New Jersey and an expanding hub in Brooklyn, FIAF is the premiere Tri-state area destination for French language learning. All FIAF teachers are native French speakers, intensively trained to teach French as a foreign language. FIAF classes use state-of-the art technological resources and have the smallest class sizes in NY. Dynamic cultural programs compliment in-class learning through immersive exposure to French language and culture. Thematic courses and seminars on pertinent topics like business and legal French, pronunciation, and translation offer honed mastery for those interested in conducting business in French-speaking countries. Fun and lively workshops teach useful vocabulary and conversation skills through cooking classes, slang seminars, theater workshops, or wine tastings. Additionally, FIAF offers the largest number of official French proficiency exams, essential for university and job applications. FIAF s Preschool welcomes three and four-year olds for a French immersion program that prepares children for acceptance into leading French, bilingual, international, and American schools. The program continues to grow, expanding from 17 children in the fall to 23 in the spring of New Jersey FIAF s thriving satellite in Montclair, New Jersey welcomes students from across the state for language learning and cultural immersion. The bright and warm space at the Carriage House is equipped with the latest technology and attracts diverse lovers of French for classes and popular social events like Rendez-Vous and Bastille Day. Cutting-edge SmartBoards in 25 classrooms in NY and NJ enhance language learning with dynamic multimedia resources. Online platforms for personalized e-learning and private one-onone video chat tutoring augment the classroom experience with customizable lessons and flexible scheduling. FIAF s digital independent study resource Speedlingua helps students perfect their diction and pronunciation in the comfort of their home. FIAF s commitment to excellence in education does not end with our Teachers. For the sixth year, the outstanding Teacher s Professional Development Workshop program equipped public and private school French teachers in the Tri-state area with FIAF s first-class pedagogical tools. Seasoned FIAF instructors and global experts collaborate to create carefully curated presentations that reinforce FIAF s position as leading center for high-quality French language instruction. FIAF Preschool; Family Saturdays Sasha Arutyunova Children and their families come to FIAF for fun, enriching classes and events in French. With the successful launch of FIAF s French immersion Preschool, children at FIAF remain a top priority. FIAF s dedication to children extends from the classroom to cultural programming for the entire family. With the launch of Family Saturdays, FIAF has made a commitment to present innovative programs and events in French and English that introduce kids to thrilling new worlds. Kids & Teens Learn French Fun at the Library Family Saturdays FIAF is for Families Immersion classes, workshops, and activities targeted to specific age groups tailor the French experience to each developmental level, in and out of the classroom. Creative cooking workshops, cultural activities, and our successful French summer day programs engage and excite an enthusiastic, young audience. Warm, vibrant, and cozy, the Espace Jeunesse in the FIAF s Haskell Library invites young visitors to explore and enjoy a rich multimedia collection carefully selected for children. The Library creates fun, engaging programs for children ages 3 8 including sing-alongs, arts and crafts, and story hours that help kids discover French in creative ways. With French books, magazines, CDs, and DVDs for kids making up a third of the Library s circulation, FIAF continues to expand children s resources to serve our youngest patrons. Older kids enjoy the extensive collection of bandes dessinées and French-language graphic novels, while teens can choose works from a special of section called Les Z Ados. FIAF s thriving Family Saturdays program welcomes families for enchanting live performances, CinéKids movie screenings, and arts-&-crafts workshops presented in both French and English. A partnership with the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) offers New Jersey families our popular CinéKids screenings with themed arts-&-crafts workshops. Onsite and in your pocket, FIAF s John and Francine Haskell Library is your portal to unsurpassed French language resources perfect for French beginners, native speakers, and everyone in between. Education Outreach Rich Multimedia Resources Library Programs FIAF is for Families Culture The Young Audience Program features films, performances, and concerts that introduce kids to French language and culture. The program serves as a welcome supplement to offset widespread cuts to arts and foreign language programs in New York City s public schools. Around 1000 students from various public schools come to FIAF for live performances presented by leading international artists. Paired with customized creative workshops and Q&A sessions, these events excite and enthrall students, from French beginners to the fully bilingual. To ensure access for a broad range of students from diverse backgrounds, the program is affordable for private schools and free of charge for public school groups. Language FIAF has created customizable language learning programs to augment foreign language curricula for schools facing budget cuts. Trained FIAF teachers travel to schools in New York and New Jersey to lead engaging French immersion classes tailored to needs of each partner school. Serving Tri-state area children since 2007 at a growing number of public and private schools, the program focuses on developing verbal and written skills in French through educational games, stories, songs, and creative projects. Haskell Library The leading private French Library in the U.S., the Haskell Library is an unmatched resource for New York Francophiles. The collection extends beyond traditional print media to offer newly released French audio books, a user-friendly online catalog, and on-site DVD and MP3 players, among other resources. FIAF Students are important users of the Library and take advantage of multimedia tools to enrich language learning, tailored by level. Culturethèque, a new digital offering, promises the best of popular media: access to top magazines like French Elle, Le Point, and Paris Match as soon as they hit newsstands, plus French TV, ebooks, and more. Users may stream titles or download them to mobile devices or home computers. The One Book, One Federation program invites Members to explore new works in a nationwide reading group that unites all national Alliance Française chapters. Active participation in the European Book Club anchors FIAF s role as a lead figure in New York s European literary scene by fostering key partnerships with other leading New York cultural programs. The club meets monthly in different cultural institutions to discuss a well-known, contemporary novel from a range of countries. FIAF Library programs like Cercles de lecture and Faites vos jeux! invite Students and Members to practice and strengthen their language skills outside the classroom in small, friendly discussion groups and monthly French game nights. American Craft, Steven and William Laad Andrew-Zuckerman Bel Borba Ka-Man Tse for the Times Square Alliance Since their launch in 2006, FIAF s flagship festivals, Crossing the Line and World Nomads, have transformed FIAF s profile on the New York arts scene and expanded the institution s diverse, engaged audience. With innovative, unique, and unpredictable programs, these festivals support FIAF s cultural mission, gaining attention and recognition from audiences, artists, press, and foundations. Crossing the Line Crossing the Line 2012 A platform for discovery, the sixth edition of Crossing the Line excited audiences and invited them to imagine the world from the stunning perspectives of 20 international artists. Highlights included a three concert series with Grammy Award-winning guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, which kicked off the festival. Pascal Rambert s critically acclaimed English-language production of Love s End thrilled audiences. Habit, David Levine s mesmerizing and (free!) experiential theater project, invited thousands of viewers to peer peeping-tom-style through windows to watch the action unfold (The New York Times, 9/27/12). An exciting new partnership with the Times Square Alliance dramatically increased the festival s visibility through several events held in the heart of New York City, including director Lotte van den Berg s Pleinvrees/Agoraphobia, which drew a curious crowd to Times Square to overhear an intimate, yet public monologue. Times Square also served as the New York base for internationally-renowned Brazilian artist Bel Borba, who undertook a month-long public art project consisting of large-scale installations made with recycled materials in places such as Roosevelt Island, Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Howard Beach, Queens. The blockbuster project included the site-specific short film Universal Pulse, shown every night in October from 11:57pm to midnight on sixteen of Times Square s iconic screens. This midnight moment screening culminated with a block-long installation in Times Square that gave spectators the rare chance to see an internationally-renowned public artist in process in the heart of New York City. Gideon Lester, Director of Theater Programs at Bard College, joined lauded festival curators Lili Chopra, Artistic Director at FIAF, and Simon Dove, independent curator. The three combined their passion and talent for an unforgettable edition of the festival. With new commissions, artist residencies, and dynamic partnerships with over 13 leading New York arts organizations, FIAF s Crossing the Line 2012, named Best of the Fests by Time Out New York, showcased brilliant new work and supported incredible cultural development, reaching a larger audience than ever before. Crossing the Line 2012 featured 9 World Premieres, 3 New York Premieres, and 6 U.S. Premieres. Crossing the Line 2012 commissioned 3 new works and gave 3 artists residencies. Time Out New York, Fall Preview, 2012 World Nomads Tunisia Rim Temimi Monte Carlo, Gabriele Basilico Sasha Arutyunova World Nomads 2013 FIAF Gallery FIAF s biennial spring World Nomads festival explores the exchange of ideas and artistic expression throughout the Francophone world. After celebrating West Africa (2008), Haiti ( 09), Lebanon ( 10), and Morocco ( 11), the fifth edition of the festival in 2013 focused on Tunisia. Free and open to the public, FIAF s Gallery welcomed more than 10,000 people over the year to experience seven exceptional exhibitions. World Nomads Tunisia Work presented as part of World Nomads Tunisia embodied both authentic traditions still alive in contemporary Tunisia and new artistic forms and voices that emerged in the aftermath of the tumultuous 2011 Arab Spring. Together with ten key partner institutions from Tunisia and the United States and seven renowned co-presenters from around New York City, FIAF brought over 40 Tunisian artists to present their work in New York City, many for the first time. The festival received rave reviews from The New York Times throughout and highlighted the immense surge of creativity in post-revolutionary Tunisia. The festival kicked off with singer Sonia M Barek, who captivated a sold-out house on opening night. Ghalia Benali gave a yearning ardent, transcendent concert, and singer Emel Mathlouthi moved audiences with her powerful, fiery music (The New York Times, 5/17/13). Tunisian graffiti artists el Seed and Jaye brought their unique style to several boroughs of New York as part of the unprecedented, four-part visual art series, The After Revolution. Influential leaders in diverse fields explored the evolving role of women in society, FIAF s Tinker Auditorium was transformed into a Tunisian Souk, and powerful dance performances from Jonah Bokaer and Radhouane El Meddeb earned critical acclaim. Over the course of the month-long festival, over 50,000 New Yorkers attended 22 cultural events.
