Roman Onderka, MBA announces 21 st Annual Leoš Janáček International Competition in Brno in violin, string quartet September The international interpretative competition is announced in accordance with the Statute of the competition, published on the website of the competition, for Violin and String Quartet. The age limit is 35 year of age for Violin (the candidate must not be thirty-five on the opening day), for String Quartets the sum of its members age must not exceed 140 years. 2. The competition in each fi eld will be held according to the following schedule: Violin String Quartet 19/09 registration 20/09 1 st round registration 21/09 1 st round 1 st round 22/09 2 nd round 2 nd round 23/09 2 nd round 3 rd round, announcement of the laureates 24/09 concert of laureates, prize-giving ceremony 25/09 3 rd round, announcement of the laureates, prize-giving ceremony A change is reserved. A detailed schedule will be sent to the competitors at least two weeks before the competition. 3. The competition consists of three rounds in each field. Competition performances are public. 4. The jury is appointed for each fi eld separately. The juries consist of important Czech and foreign artists and experts. Decisions of the juries are fi nal. 6. Financial awards are announced for each fi eld separately: 1 st prize CZK 100,000 2 nd prize CZK 70,000 3 rd prize CZK 40,000 The jury can give special awards for the best interpretation of the chosen compositions. The financial awards above are subject to tax and/or other possible deductions in accordance with laws and regulations valid in the Czech Republic. 6. The juries reserve the right not to award individual prizes, to divide them (ex aequo) or to unite them in accordance with the Statute of the competition. 7. The title Laureate of Leoš Janáček International Competition in Brno, together with diplomas with their names, titles and prizes belong to all prize bearers. Bearers of honourable mention and other prizes and bonuses will also get diplomas without any claim to the title of laureate. The competition repertoire for VIOLIN: Round I: a) One of the capricios Op. 1 by N. Paganini. b) One of the following sonatas by J. S. Bach: Adagio and Fuga in G minor, BWV 1001, Sonata No. 1 Grave and Fuga in A minor, BWV 1003, Sonata No. 2 Adagio and Fuga in C major, BWV 1005, Sonata No. 3 Ciaccona in D minor, BWV 1004, Partita No. 2 The compositions have to be played by heart. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor. Round II: a) L. Janáček: Sonata for Violin and Piano Performance by heart is not required. b) One of the following compositions by W. A. Mozart: 1 st movement with cadence of the concerto No. 3 in G major, KV st movement with cadence of the concerto No. 4 in D major, KV st movement with cadence of the concerto No. 5 in A major, KV 219 The composition has to be played by heart. c) A virtuoso composition from any style period based on the candidate s choice. The composition has to be played by heart. The selection must not include the composition interpreted in the fi rst round. Maximum lenght of the performance is 45 minutes. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor. Round III: One of the following violin concertos with orchestra: L. Janáček: Violin Concerto The Wandering of the Little Soul A. Dvořák: Concerto for Violin in A minor, Op. 53 B. Martinů: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 The composition has to be played by heart. The third round will be held in cooperation with a professional orchestra. In this case a concert of the laureates in violin does not take place. On request the organizer is able to provide a piano accompaniment. In case of need, the competitor may be asked to provide the piano accompaniment in edition in which the performance will be played. The competition repertoire for STRING QUARTET: Round I: a) W. A. Mozart one of the following string quartets: (quartets by W. A. Mozart dedicated to J. Haydn) in G major, KV 387 in D minor, KV 421 (417b) in E-fl at major, KV 428 (421b) in B-fl at major, KV 458 The Hunt in A major, KV 464 in C major, KV 465 Dissonance (recommended edition: Bärenreiter) b) L. Janáček: String Quartet No. 1 inspired by L. N. Tolstoy s Kreutzer Sonata (1923) (editor according to own choice recommended edition: Bärenreiter) The order of the compositions depends on the competitors. Round II: a) One composition from 20 th or 21 st century based on the candidate s choice. The selection must not include the composition interpreted in the fi rst and the third round. b) A. Dvořák one of the following string quartets: in E-fl at major, Op. 51 Slavonic (1879) in A-fl at major, Op. 105 (1895) in G major, Op. 106 (1895) The order of the compositions depends on the competitors. Round III: L. Janáček: String Quartet No. 2 Intimate Letters Concert of laureates All laureates, bearers of honourable mention and other prizes and bonuses are obliged to attend the fi nal prize-giving ceremony. 8. The organizer reserves the right to record competition performances. Participants do not have a right to any payment for it. Competition performances of the candidates can be recorded and broadcasted by television and radio. 9. Participants can notify possible changes in repertoire by 31 July, On request the Faculty of Music organizes accommodation in student dormitory Astorka (IVU centrum Astorka, Novobranská 3, Brno; The participants of the fi rst round have to pay themselves the accommodation (cost of the accommodation will be available for download on the website of the competition). From the second round the accommodation for the advancing competitors is paid by the organizer (only in student dormitory Astorka). If the candidates choose different accommodation facilities, it will be at their own expenses. 11. Transport and boarding are arranged and paid by participants themselves. 12. In case of late arrival at the competition performance or breaking the rules or status of the competition, participants will be eliminated from the competition. 13. Application deadline and payment of an administrative fee: 1 June, The application is necessary to fill in electronically: for Violin on: for String Quartet on: The electronic application must be printed, signed and sent by post together with a copy of a confirmation of payment of the administrative fee to the Project department of the Faculty of Music (decides the date of dispatch of the letter on the postmark). Only electronically fi lled in application is invalid and cannot be registered if it is not sent with all the attachments in the relevant prescribed form.
