Analytical services for water analysis at Åbo Akademi University We offer a range of different analyses for process waters, effluents, recipient waters, drinking water, and other water sources. The main analyses are described below. For a larger entity of different analyses, please contact the coordinator for the water analysis services: Professor Stefan Willför, Johan Gadolin Process Chemistry Centre (Wood and Paper Chemistry), tel Industrial process waters and effluents (especially from the forest industry and plant biomass based biorefineries) TOC analysis (Total Organic Carbon) COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) Extractives (GCFID, GCMS) o Fatty and resin acids o Sterols o Steryl esters and triglycerides o Lignans, stilbenes, flavonoids (polyphenols) o Other extractives Carbohydrates (GCFID) o Hemicelluloses, cellulose, starch, sugars Dissolved lignin/aromatics (UVVis) Molar mass determination of polymeric THF or watersoluble compounds (e.g. extractives, polymers, hemicelluloses, lignin) (HPSEC) Analysis of particles and bacteria in water suspensions and process waters (Flow cytometry) Total solid content, suspended solids, ash content, turbidity, charge density etc. In some cases, especially dissolved unsaturated and aromatic compounds can form oligomers and polymers. We have experience from a combination of analytical methods to study lso such compounds. We can also perform isolation and identification of unknown compounds with a combination of analytical methods (including MS, NMR, FTIR etc.). Solid samples can be dissolved in an acid (dissolution in microwave oven) and analysed with ICPOES or ICPMS. Organic elements (C, H, N, S, O) can be determined with our elemental analyser. Water content ( 1 %) in different samples can be determined with coulometric KarlFisher titration. We have solid experience of microcystin and cylindrospermopsin analyses in water samples, plankton material and other matrices by LCMS, HPLCDAD, and ELISA techniques. We cannot usually accept single samples but wish to become involved in longterm monitoring and research projects. We can also offer various consulting services in the field of cyanobacterial toxins.
