This is the time of the year where I start promoting my trips to France and although I haven t had the great privilege to have you be part of my past trips, maybe this year the timing of my 2014 trips will better fit your schedule or the choice of regions visited will be more appealing to you and you might be considering joining me. For the case you might be interested and before the information goes out next week to the National Chaine membership, I have two trips scheduled in 2014, one in June and the other in September and both in the same region: the South West of France. In September, our trip will be overlapping one night with the floating Assemblage cruising at that time in Europe and will be having a dinner altogether. My trips to France are all about Savoir Bien Vivre. In short, it is a lifestyle where we appreciate the present moment and give less importance to the things of life that are not essential to our wellbeing. For example, spending more time with your loved one, family and friends highly contributes to enhance our quality of life. Taking the time to appreciate the pleasures of the table where food, wine and camaraderie blend together to create some of the most memorable times of our life is another aspect of the Savoir Bien Vivre. This is what I would like you to experience next June or September. Let me share with you some distinctiveness of these three great regions of France: Basque Country The Pays Basque is part of the south of France and is less uniformly picturesque, for one thing, and doesn t lend itself to easy characterization. Its often flat, placid coast lies flush against a mountainous interior. Although the region itself, particularly that cloistered interior, has remained curiously off the radar, a handful of notable French chefs attracted to the region s still largely agrarian lifestyle, gastronomic richness, and untapped potential have forsaken marquee jobs in major cities to open exceptional restaurants and inns in the area. They re putting the Pays Basque s culinary and cultural traditions into a fresh new context. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Biarritz has long been a fashionable resort. After gaining popularity as the seaside resort town favored by French royalty, the village of Biarritz grew increasingly cosmopolitan, attracting international jet setters and gaining a reputation as the queen of beaches and beach of kings. Biarritz lies along the Basque coast, adjacent to Spain's Basque region, the influences of which are apparent in Biarritz's architecture and cuisine. Perigord Located approximately 500 km southwest of Paris, and 120 km from Bordeaux, the Perigord offers a virtual mosaic of landscapes, as well as local customs and cuisines which are as colorful as surrounding cliffs and valleys. The Perigord region is less than ten thousand square kilometers in size, and is located within the larger territory of the Dordogne. The landscapes of the region, however, are so rich and diverse that we often refer to them by their color. We will be visiting more specifically the Black Perigord of the southeast region. The landscape is deeply covered with thick forests of chestnut, oak and pine trees, which cast a darkening almost mystical shadow over the area. The Black Perigord is probably the best known and most visited due to its rich historic heritage. Sarlat is without a doubt one of the most beautiful medieval cities of France. Bordeaux Wine Region Situated in southwest France and located halfway between the North Pole and the equator, the Bordeaux wine region stretches from the Atlantic Ocean along the Gironde Estuary and follows the Dordogne and Gironde rivers inland being over 130 miles. Presently 120,000 hectares are in vines making it the second biggest wine region in the world behind the Languedoc. Over 700 million bottles of Bordeaux wine are produced every year, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine, to the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world with one third of all the good quality wine in France coming from the region. Bordeaux wine is made in 9,000 wineries called Chateaux from the grapes of 13,000 grape growers. There are 57 appellations of Bordeaux wine. Now that you are more familiar with these regions, here is a summary of the specifics of this trip: 10 nights- 11 days trip. The trip starts in Bordeaux and ends in Bordeaux Date: June 13- June 23 and September 3- September to 14 guests Price per person for 11 days: $7,630 all inclusive except the air fare 10% of the price will be donated to the National Chaine Foundation Attached are all the relevant documents in order to helping you with your decision making process. I would encourage you to take a close look and should you be interested, I would suggest not to wait too long as the reservations will be established on a first come- first served basis. You can of course let me know verbally of your participation, but preferably if you are interested, in order to secure your reservation, it would be safer to send your deposit and application. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. I really hope that you will be joining me as I will be very privileged to lead you through a memorable trip to regions of France that I know you will really enjoy.
