Therefore we were unable to publish the amount. This Week s Second Collection: Maintenance and Development. Please be generous. REMINDER If there is a delay or cancellation at the Hudson Public Schools due to inclement weather, the daily Mass here is also canceled. This weekend we celebrate the wonderful Feast of the Epiphany, the arrival of the Magi at the stable in Bethlehem. My immediate association is the touching Children s Pageant here on December 22 nd when the Three Kings indeed brought the nativity story to its conclusion. Little Children do lead us to Bethlehem and the Newborn King. Many thanks to all who contributed to making that happen. As this feast celebrates the Magi bringing gifts to Bethlehem, we are reminded of the many, many gifts that have been exchanged over these past couple of weeks. We especially are grateful to all who participated in the Annual Giving Tree program in early December. David and Jan Fournier and their helpers did a wonderful job coordinating and distributing all those gifts. We are also reminded of the gift God gave to us by making His dwelling place in our midst a gift that is given long after the unwrapping!! As we enter into this New Year, God asks us to gift one another with His love, compassion, mercy and understanding each day. For this is what Christmas is all about. God gave us His only begotten Son and asks us to keep His presence in our lives. May the year 2013 be a blessed and healthy year for us all! Create a warm, caring, supportive family. Tap into your own way of showing your kids you care. Spend time together in ways that fit your lifestyle. Try to make time for regular meals together, go for walks, talk in the car and attend church together. 2. Maintain open, honest communication with your children. Lots of kids today text many of them with their parents. If it works for your family, go for it. The way you talk together matters less than how much you truly listen. 3. Connect your kids to other caring adults. Introduce your children to people you like and respect. Support those positive relationships that develop naturally. 4. Get involved with your children s school and activities. Try to take advantage of opportunities to attend your child s activities and support his/her church and school activities. If you are too busy to attend, at the very least connect with your child s teachers via or phone and/or have a grandparent or other close relative take your place. 5. Empower your children to contribute. All people need to know they are valued and valuable, it s human nature. Show kids that they are valued at home by giving them increasing levels of responsibility. Take it a step further by helping them get engaged in service in their community, whether in the church, neighborhood, school, or somewhere else. 6. Keep your child safe. If you are communicating with your child you ll know what s going on in their lives, where they may need some help, or if they might need someone to look out for them. If they have contributing roles and positive influences in they lives they re more than likely to make safe choices. 7. Set boundaries and expectations. Reward your child s positive behavior and limit opportunities for the negative. The key to reducing everyone s stress and frustration about limits and expectations is to be clear, concise and reasonable. 8. Praise your child s achievements. Children who receive genuine praise from their parents and the adults around them have more self-confidence and a higher self-esteem. They are better able to form good habits based on the praise they receive. THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD When people in the entertainment industry reach a top level of fame and expertise in their profession, we talk about them as having a lot of star power. These are the men and women who eclipse lesser lights in the entertainment constellation. No matter the generation, there are always names like Monroe, Taylor, Burton, Olivier, McCartney, Springsteen, Madonna, Hanks, Streep, or Sarandon who will shine brighter than others who will also have their name inscribed on the Walk of Fame. Stars at this level of their craft can basically ask for whatever they want because they are sought after by just about everyone. Their performances, whether a live concert or on the screen, have the ability to unite people in a common experience. The real Star of Matthew's Gospel today is not the one that appears in the sky to the Magi. Yes, that star is an important sign-it led the Magi from the east to Jerusalem where they learned of the prophecy about Bethlehem. That star led them to the home of the Child they would worship. This Child is the real star of the Gospel story. He comes into the world. In the midst of conflict and division, exemplified by Herod's distrust and fear, Jesus comes as the newborn king to save his people from their sins. As Matthew tells it, Jesus is the One who unites faithful Jew and believing Gentile bringing together all those who would seek the truth and follow his teaching. The feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the world. His revelation means that people must choose whether to follow him or not. Herod had that choice. So did the Magi. Men and women from every race and nation come to Christ. Once they choose to follow Christ, they become brothers and sisters of one another. Christ unites all believers in a common experience, his call to love. That's star power beyond imagining! Liturgical Publications Inc Sunday Throughout the Week: EPIPHANY OF THE LORD SHARING THE GOSPEL The Three Wise Men told Herod about a King being born. Herod was jealous. He did not want another king to be more powerful than he. Herod told them to come back and tell him where the baby was. They thought Herod was truly interested in Jesus. After they gave him their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, an angel warned them, Go back a different way. Herod wants to kill the baby Jesus. PRAYER Lord, give me the power to help others, not harm them. SOMETHING TO DRAW Draw an angel telling the Three Wise Men not to tell Herod where Jesus was.
